Small Animal Bowen Therapy

Gentle Nervous-System-Based Bodywork for Dogs & Cats

Bowen Therapy is a subtle yet powerful form of bodywork originally developed for people by Tom Bowen, an Australian practitioner in the mid-20th century. Tom Bowen discovered that light, precise movements over muscles and connective tissue—followed by intentional pauses—could stimulate profound whole-body responses without force or manipulation.

Over time, Bowen principles were carefully adapted for animals, honoring differences in anatomy, posture, and biomechanics while preserving the core philosophy:
work with the nervous system, not against it.

Today, Bowen Therapy is used worldwide to support both humans and animals experiencing discomfort, mobility challenges, stress, or chronic conditions.

My Bowen Background

I have been practicing Bowen Therapy for 18 years. I began as a human practitioner, before transitioning my focus toward animal care—first with horses, and later expanding into small animal. This foundation in human Bowen deeply informs how I approach animals: with patience, precision, and respect for how the nervous system drives healing.

What Is Small Animal Bowen Therapy?

Small Animal Bowen Therapy is a gentle, hands-on technique using light rolling movements over specific anatomical points, followed by short pauses. These pauses allow the nervous system time to process and respond.

Bowen does not stretch, force, manipulate, or crack joints. Instead, it sends clear neurological input that encourages the body to:

  • Release tension

  • Improve movement patterns

  • Reorganize posture

  • Reset compensation patterns

  • Reduce pain responses

  • Improve circulation

  • Enhance parasympathetic (rest-and-repair) activity

The body continues integrating Bowen work for several days after each session.

What Bowen Therapy Can Help With

Bowen Therapy supports both acute and chronic conditions, as well as preventative maintenance.

🐾 Mobility & Musculoskeletal Support

  • Arthritis and age-related stiffness

  • Hip dysplasia

  • Elbow dysplasia

  • Cruciate injury recovery

  • Patella issues

  • Back pain

  • Neck tension

  • Uneven gait

  • Postural imbalance

  • Compensation patterns

🐾 Acute Injuries

  • Soft tissue strain

  • Overexertion

  • Post-surgical recovery

  • Sudden lameness

  • Muscle guarding

🐾 Chronic Conditions

  • Long-standing stiffness

  • Recurring soreness

  • Chronic tension

  • Neurological compensation

  • Degenerative joint conditions

🐾 Nervous System Regulation

  • Anxiety

  • Restlessness

  • Hypervigilance

  • Difficulty settling

  • Overstimulation

🐾 Performance & Working Dogs

  • Agility dogs

  • Sporting dogs

  • Service dogs

  • Therapy dogs

  • Highly active breeds

🐾 Senior Dogs

  • Reduced range of motion

  • Slower transitions (lying down / getting up)

  • Postural changes

  • Reduced stamina

What Types of Dogs Benefit Most?

Bowen Therapy is especially helpful for:

  • Senior dogs

  • Sensitive or reactive dogs

  • Dogs who don’t tolerate forceful manipulation

  • Athletic or working dogs

  • Dogs recovering from surgery or injury

  • Dogs with subtle, hard-to-diagnose tension patterns

  • Dogs whose mobility is “just not what it used to be”

It is safe, gentle, and adaptable for small breeds, large breeds, and cats as well.

How Sessions Work

Each Bowen session is calm, quiet, and unhurried.

Your pet remains comfortable—often lying down or standing naturally. The moves are light and precise, with built-in pauses that allow the nervous system to integrate.

Because Bowen communicates directly with the autonomic nervous system, it is offered as a stand-alone modality and is not layered with other therapies during the same appointment. This ensures the body can fully process and respond to the input.

What to Expect After a Session

It is common to observe:

  • Increased relaxation or sleepiness

  • Improved posture

  • Looser, freer movement

  • Subtle shifts over 3–7 days

Many dogs show noticeable changes within 24–72 hours, while deeper structural patterns may shift more gradually.

Recommended Starting Plan

For addressing a specific issue—whether acute or chronic—a starting series of:

3–4 sessions spaced approximately one week apart

is typically ideal.

This allows:

  • The nervous system to recognize healthier movement patterns

  • Compensations to unwind progressively

  • The body to adapt without overwhelm

  • Results to build from session to session

After the initial series, most pets transition into:

Maintenance Sessions as Needed

Some dogs benefit from monthly care, others seasonally, and some only during flare-ups.

Preventative Maintenance Matters

Bowen Therapy is not just for injury or pain.

Preventative care:

  • Maintains healthy posture

  • Reduces compensatory strain

  • Improves body awareness

  • Supports aging gracefully

  • Keeps athletic dogs balanced

  • Minimizes chronic inflammation buildup

When used proactively, Bowen helps prevent small imbalances from becoming larger structural problems.

A Gentle, Intelligent Approach to Healing

Bowen Therapy does not override the body—it reminds it how to function efficiently.

It is:

  • Non-invasive

  • Nervous-system focused

  • Gentle yet powerful

  • Appropriate for sensitive animals

  • Ideal for both acute recovery and long-term maintenance

Is Bowen Right for Your Pet?

If your dog or cat is:

  • Moving differently

  • Aging

  • Recovering

  • Guarding tension

  • Acting uncomfortable

  • Or simply needing deeper nervous system support

Bowen Therapy may be an excellent option.
